Introduction In most companies today, the HR function provides vital services to such stakeholders as job applicants, workers, supervisors, middle managers, and executives. Yet, the HR function tends to be located at the end of the business chain, on the reactive side, and too frequently centers on carrying out actions rather than achieving outcomes. The role of the HR function is frequently one of providing people, training, and secluded HR efforts after others have formulated organizational strategy and have initiated operational accomplishment. Cost centered management of worker benefits programs such as health insurance, workers' compensation, and pension plans have also figure outstandingly in an effort to control out of control operating costs (Dunn, 2006). Discussion The HRM department at our company does not really play a strategic role in the organization. Presently they spend the majority of their time doing the day to day things like hiring people, training, and other HR efforts that allow the business to function everyday. In order for business to achieve success in the every changing business world it is important for HR departments to become more strategically aligned with the overall goals and efforts of companies. There are three key reasons why businesses are changing their methods. The first is reducing costs. HR departments should no longer want to be seen as just a support function and cost center, they need to show their value. Secondly, it is the competitiveness of business today and the fight to employ and retain people that will help drive the business. Finally, HR departments are now expected to have an understanding of how other departments function in order to make a valuable contribution to the whole of the business (Brockway, 2007). The HR professional who will succeed in guiding their organizations into the future will be those who understand and use business strategy; understand corporate culture, plans and policies; recognize future problems and work solutions; can deal with all types of people; can communicate well verbally and in writing; and can recognize, recruit and train future executives. As organizations continue to move towards collective systems and combined financial resources for managing their human capital, we are likely to see more organizational structures combining both HR and Organizational Development (OD). The time has come to quit debating OD's involvement in HR systems and seek the present opportunities of showcasing the skills of OD in building organizational capacity and having a measurable impact on workforce productivity.

Cell Phone Use While driving Essay

While driving through the city you see many on their cell phones while driving. When on the road, or away from my loved ones we always want to make sure that we are in touch with them in case of an emergency. Many state that turning off your phone is key to being a safer driver. I disagree with that statement because your family needs you at any time of the day and that is why cell phone usage should be allowed while driving. Although some say that talking on the cell phone while driving is dangerous, i disagree because talking on the cell phone is just as dangerous as turning on the radio while driving, talking to the passenger, looking at the speed limit sign, eating food, or putting on makeup while driving. Nobody wants to be told when and when not to use their own cell phone, would if you could only use your car when you were told you were able to drive it. People will refuse to be told when and when not to use their cellphones, therefore there is no way to enforce this law. Some say that talking on the cell phone While driving is dangerous. â€Å"Talking on the cell phone makes you 1.3 times more likely to crash than if you were a non distracted driver.† This law should not pass because a driver that is under the influence, is far more dangerous than a driver who is talking on her cell phone, yes there are fatalities when people are on their phones. there was 3,000 deaths due to the use of cellphones while driving, compared to the 10,000 deaths that drunk driving has caused in one year! Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. (MADD.org) Almost every 90 seconds, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. (MADD.org) Enforcing a bigger issue such as drunk driving is what we should be focusing on instead of talking while driving. I would have a far more concern driving next to a drunk driver other than somebody that is talking on the cell phone rather than somebody who is drunk. Some people need to learn how to call and drive, some are far better than others at talking while driving. maybe we should teach this in drivers ed classes, and teach people how to be safer while driving. â€Å"TSA’S 100 car study indicated that if a driver takes his or hers eyes off the road for more than two seconds the risk of them crashing is greatly increases the risks of crashing.† I disagree with this statement, because it may make you more likely to crash, but a lot of things distract you on the road such as the radio, food, makeup, people on the side of the road etc. Some say that driving didstracted is one of the most dangerous  things that you can do, but that is wrong in my opinion, being distracted can be dangerous but compared to drunk driving or driving under the influence, being distracted is a very sma ll problem, being distracted while driving is dangerous but in the world there are over double the fatalities as distracted driving has. We should focus more on drunk driving than distracted drivers. Also the intensity of the call matters, if you are talking on the phone and in an intense conversation you are twice as likely to crash the vehicle. But still drunk driving is a lot more dangerous than talking while driving. There are some variations to the texting/calling while driving law that many americans are trying to enforce today that are somewhat reasonable and somewhat not. â€Å" Turning your cell phone off and allowing calls to go to voicemail while you’re driving is key to safer driving† this quote states that you should keep your phone off at all times while driving. I disagree with the fact that i should be told when and when not i can use my phone. For example, would if it is an emergency call and it can not wait? All phone carriers (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile etc.) need to have a drivers mode setting on their phone i think, the drivers mode would work like this, if a family member or a emerge ncy contact calls you more than once, the call will go through, but if they only call you once the call will be stopped. This is one great alternative to saving lives on the road without taking away the privilege of using your cell phone while driving. People in america will respond better to this new law instead of rebellious actions from the community. â€Å" Letting drivers know laws will be enforced has been devoloped to enforce drunk driving, speeding, seat belts etc.† Yes, i agree that trying to enforce the cell phone law will help prevent crashes, but how do you enforce this law, by talking to the phone carriers to put a drivers mode on every cell phone in America is the best way to enforce this rule. Sometimes you need to take important phone calls while you’re in the car, that is why this law should not be enforced, there are many times in the car when you do not need to take phone calls, surf the web, text your friends while driving. Doing this kind of stuff while driving is bad and dangerous that is why many phone companies should have the drivers mode setting on their phone devices. There are many fatalities every year and texting and driving is not the main thing we need to be focusing on.

LinkedIn Changes Whats New on LinkedIn in December 2017 I haven’t provided an update on what’s new on LinkedIn for about six months. The time has come! As you may remember, Microsoft purchased LinkedIn in at this time in 2016, and there was much speculation as to the LinkedIn changes that would come. We’re starting to find out! I believe (pure speculation on my part) that a lot of the LinkedIn changes that happened through May were already in the works prior to the Microsoft acquisition. Here’s an end-of-year round-up on what’s happened since then. You’ll notice a lot of these items are unequivocally a result of the Microsoft + LinkedIn marriage. Others are in the job search and messaging realm, and then there’s one upgrade to LinkedIn’s video capabilities. I’m curious to know what you think of these changes. Do you think they are improvements to the LinkedIn platform? Microsoft and LinkedIn Integration Features 1. LinkedIn’s Profile Card on Office 365 This feature only works if you use Office 365. Personally, I don’t think it’s valuable enough to convince people to get Office 365, but maybe that’s the idea? Here’s how it works: You can now connect your LinkedIn account to your Microsoft account. This move gives you access to information about your contacts that’s sourced from their LinkedIn profile. By hovering over a contact’s name, you’ll be able to see where they work, what they do, and where they went to school. This might seem disturbing, except you do have them in your contacts list already, so theoretically it’s not too creepy that you can easily find out more about them. Use this Office 365 integration to better understand colleagues, customers or partners. Youll get a good foundation to collaborate efficiently, whether they are within or outside your organization. According to LinkedIn (as of September 25, 2017), integration  with  the Profile Card  in Office 365  was to roll out in  October on  Outlook  on the web, SharePoint and OneDrive for Business. The LinkedIn integration was then to roll out to  Outlook.com customers, with  Outlook  for Windows, Outlook  for  iOS,  and other Office products  following. To set up the 365/LinkedIn integration, just open a person’s Profile Card in Outlook and click on the LinkedIn match. You’ll say â€Å"Yes, let’s go† when prompted and â€Å"accept† in order to view information about your contact. 2.  Desktop App for Windows 10 For those of you using Windows 10, LinkedIn has created a new LinkedIn desktop app  so that you access LinkedIn without having to open your browser. You’ll get real-time professional updates, including new messages, insights on whos viewed your profile, trending news in your industry and other timely highlights on your professional network.† You’ll also be able to manage the types of updates you receive. 3.  Find Resume Keywords with Microsoft and LinkedIn After you select your desired role and industry on LinkedIn, Resume Assistant will use the LinkedIn database to identify the skills listed by other similar professionals. You can then add those skills if applicable. (Need a new skill? Maybe you can pick it up with LinkedIn Learning.) Youll also see relevant job listings, along with details of what the job requires, which can be extremely helpful as you tailor your resume to a specific role. Remember, there’s no â€Å"one size fits all† resume – so use this tool to create a resume that matches a specific job opening! LinkedIn’s Job Search and Networking Tools 4.  Open Candidates Open Candidates is not new, but I thought it was worth including. LinkedIn announced improvements to the feature in October, with the special reminder that Open Candidates is NOT a public status but a private indication to recruiters that you are open for opportunities. Find it in the Career Interests section within  Your Dashboard. Once you turn on Open Candidates, LinkedIn will ask questions about your job requirements that are meant to ensure you’re contacted for positions that fit your interests. On the horizon are â€Å"personalized suggestions to help you improve your profile, as well as unique insights on how much attention you’re getting from recruiters.† If you’re is using these LinkedIn changes, I’d love to hear what results you’re getting! 5.  Who You Know Can Help You Get the Job Networking has been proven again and again to be the #1 way to get a job. Between 70 and 85 percent of people ended up in the current position due to networking. That’s why LinkedIn has made it easy to find out who you know at a company who might be able to help you get your next job. When you look at a job opening or a Company Page on LinkedIn, you’ll automatically see your mutual connections  in the  messaging conversation window. Reach out to the people you know at a company to learn more about the culture, make an introduction, or maybe even learn about a job opening. Taking these steps is absolutely essential for your job search success! 6.  Profile Access: Hover to Learn More On a related note, LinkedIn had eliminated the ability to hover over people and companies to see more without having to click their profile. Now they’ve brought it back! Enjoy. 7. LinkedIn Career Advice Want to be a mentor or a mentee? Career Advice helps connect LinkedIn members for mentorship opportunities. To get started, go to the dashboard on your  LinkedIn Profile  and find the Career Advice hub. From there, enter your preferences for the type of advice you’re looking to give or receive and LinkedIn will recommend appropriate connections. This could be a great way to advance your own career, or to contribute to another professional’s success. LinkedIn Changes to Messaging Features 8.  Active Status on LinkedIn Messaging LinkedIn changes are making it more and more like Facebook every day. Now you can see whether your connections are logged into LinkedIn. Just look for the green dot next to their profile photo, which indicates they’re currently online. Maybe they’ll respond faster if you message them. Maybe not. But it’s always nice to feel like we know what someone’s doing at any moment, right? 9.  Smart Reply Messages When you receive a message in the LinkedIn messaging app, you’ll be given suggestions on how to reply. Some options are a thumbs up icon, smiley face emoji, and phrases like â€Å"Thanks,† â€Å"You’re welcome,† â€Å"Good luck,† â€Å"Sure,† â€Å"Not sure,† â€Å"Hi [first name],â€Å" and many other surprisingly responsive canned messages. Warning: If you click on any of those messages, the message gets sent exactly as is, without space for you to add to it. So I almost always forgo the smart replies and write my own message, unless my response is a simple thumbs up. Use these as you see fit. It’s kind of fun just to see how appropriate (or not) the suggested messages are! LinkedIn Video 10.  LinkedIn Video Sharing videos on LinkedIn has become easier than ever. If you’re on the LinkedIn mobile app, look for the share box at the top of the feed (iOS) or the post button (Android) and tap on the video icon. You can record a video in the app, or upload something you recorded earlier. After you post a video, you can see who’s viewing it and how many views, likes, and comments it’s receiving. These activities also mirror the advantages that organisations gain by pursuing internationalisation strategy such as greater market share, brand awareness and revenue, accessing more resources or technology for competitive advantage, efficiency and economies of scale which lowers cost of production, spreading of business risk and creation of entry barriers to one’s industry. Factor conditions refer to the inputs that are necessary for a firm to compete such as capital, infrastructure, land and labour. According to Porter (1990) the stock of factors in a country at any given time is less important than the extent to which they are upgraded and deployed. In reference to Dunning's resource seeking internationalisation objective, a company may therefore be attracted to a part icular country where its key resources are generally rapidly upgraded for example the strong government support experienced in China’s manufacturing industry. Home demand conditions refer to the level of demand of a particular product locally in comparison to its level of demand abroad. It is largely influenced by size, number of independent buyers, sophistication of local buyers, rate of demand growth, early demand and early saturation. A more demanding local market leads to national advantage and a strong, trend-setting local market helps local firms anticipate global trends. Early saturation of the local market also motivates firms to continue innovation and to reduce cost and/or pricing of products for example Japan’s TV industry saturated early and forced home players to seek new markets in Europe and North America. Finally, the home firms will be forced to enter foreign markets, Dunning’s market seeking international activity, in the search for more busine ss and sustainable growth.
